Dr. William G. Sutherland (1873-1954) spent his life researching,
practicing, and advancing the concepts of self-healing.
Sutherland understood the relationship between the cerebral
spinal fluid and the central nervous system.  He established
the principle that the body's central nervous system is in
"constant rhythmic motion" and that this motion is an essential
factor in human health and sustaining life.  He referred to the
cerebrospinal fluid as "the physical manifestation of our spirit."
Dr. Sutherland identified our "living anatomy" as:

  • Motion at the cranial sutures (the fibrous bands of tissue linking the bones of the skull)
  • "Expansion and contraction" of the hemispheres of the brain
  • Motion of the membranes covering the brain and the spinal cord
  • A fluid wave within the cerebral spinal fluid that bathes the brain and spinal cord
  • Involuntary, "subtle" motion of the sacrum (tailbone)

Although Dr. Sutherland was viewed by some as a "heretic" and "quack", subsequent research
and the advancement of computerized diagnostic equipment, conclusively validated Dr.
Sutherland's theory about the body's physiologic structure.  Dr. John E. Upledger studied the
work of Sutherland and it was Upledger who popularized CranioSacral "balancing" or

A person receiving a CranioSacral treatment lies fully clothed on the massage table.  As in Reiki,
the practitioner's hands are placed very lightly on your body.  By "listening" to the respiration
and tides of the cerebral spinal fluid in the tissues (that is, the "craniosacral rhythm"), the
practitioner reads the subtle disharmonies that exist in the craniosacral system.  As a general
rule, the person receiving the treatment goes into a deeply relaxed state where the body and
spirit can feel safe and protected.   His or her body then begins to adjust and naturally restore
balance to the tissues.

People receiving CranioSacral work report that they experience an increase in energy, a
reduction in stress levels, and a heightened sense of well-being as well as better overall health
and a stronger resistance to disease and infection.

CranioSacral therapy is so gentle that it can be safely be used on people of all ages from infants
to senior citizens.
