WHAT IS MASSAGE THERAPY?

Massage Therapy is manual manipulation of the soft tissues of the body including muscles, connective
tissue, tendons, ligaments and joints by applying pressure to the body.  It is an alternative health option to
help alleviate the discomfort associated with everyday and occupational stresses, as well as muscular
overuse and chronic pain.  If employed early enough after accidents involving trauma and injury, massage
can also greatly reduce the development of painful muscular patterns.

An increasing number of research studies show massage reduces heart rate, lowers blood pressure,
increases blood circulation and lymph flow, relaxes muscles, improves range of motion, and increases
endorphins (enhancing medical treatment). Although therapeutic massage does not increase muscle
strength, it can stimulate weak, inactive muscles and, thus, partially compensate for the lack of exercise and
inactivity resulting from illness or injury. It also can hasten and lead to a more complete recovery from
exercise or injury.
